peasant butter

About a year ago, I started buying Kerrygold butter. I tried it out on a whim, based on a recipe that recommended it. More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but this butter is good. You notice the difference, especially if it’s being spread on something. Like toast or corn on the cob.

Vince fell in love with the butter and questioned why we never got this before.

Me: Because it’s expensive. You only get like 2 sticks of butter for the price of 4.
Him: We need this butter. Not that “peasant butter”. This is the butter for kings and queens.

And so now, in our lives, we call the store brand butter, peasant butter. Vince will gauge our current financial status on whether or not I buy peasant butter or the good stuff. The King’s butter.

I haven’t bought peasant butter for a few months. Not because we are living the peasant life…it just seemed unnecessary. Plus back to school with Scarlett, her birthday, and summer vacation about murdered my bank account. I’m not about living a life of lack though. I’d rather find ways to make MORE money than trim away at things that make my family happy…. like butter.

So the other day, I added Kerrygold “the King’s” butter to my shopping cart online. And, after a moment’s thought, I added peasant butter as well. I figured the peasant sticks could be used for cooking. Vince has been getting up every morning since school started to make the girls breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, fresh fruit, and a glass of OJ [side note: there is no peasant orange juice. Damn store brand is like $9 a fucking gallon…WTF!?] Anyways, it’s really sweet of him to do this and the girls love it. Scarlett said Daddy’s eggs are the only thing that get her up in the morning.

Anyways, point is, that’s a lot of breakfast being cooked and hence, a lot of butter. I didn’t want him to use the good butter for that. So, I bought the two types of butter.

Groceries arrived home. When I was unloading the cold stuff into the fridge, I called out to Vince, who was in the other room.

Me: Hey! I bought peasant butter and the good butter! So, use the peasant butter for cooking and the good butter for spreading on things!

Vince: Like, on each other?!

It took me a second. Then I started laughing. This is why I married this man. But no, we are not using the King’s butter for that.
